AmA Evolution : Nadiyah Lewis- Sincerity, Soul and Sophistication

I have been a musician for 27 years in the Sf Bay Area. My taste in music is about as eclectic as the people of this area. We get folks from all over the world and it is our responsibility to write and play them good music. I have seen what turns people on and off. From rock to soul to country and blues. Funk, punk, classical, pop, electronic and of course, hip hop. Some of these styles have been enhanced by technology: auto tune, sampled backing vocal tracks, special audio enhancing effects, etc...

But when folks start spending hard earned money to go to see a band perform, they're usually looking for raw talent. A voice to deliver a message with sincerity, soul and sophistication. Someone to act as a channel between the driving, live sound of the band and the audience. Someone to identify with during this life long journey. And as I mentioned earlier, technology has allowed almost anyone to emulate and replicate the sound of talent, but few will be acknowledged as someone with a natural gift of music.

What I hear from Nadiyah Lewis is natural and raw talent. Hers is a voice that rings loud and clear beyond any synthesis or enhanced version of vocal melody. Enriched with that wisdom of clarity so coveted by singers we have grown up with and still listen to today. Mick Jagger is one of those singers who has said his attempt to sound like a black lady should be more than apparent. Because he loves the sound. It's a voice that tells the history and struggle of African/Americans alike. It is a sound that comes from the very roots of this amazing country. A sound that has always been at the heart of our music and culture in America. And there is no better example of it once you hear the real thing.

Nadiyah Lewis, the singer of AmA Evolution is exactly that.
Delivered live with sincerity, soul and sophistication. Something we all love to see more and more of during these strange, crazy and benevolent days...

Po' tree: Rekindled

She left her heart on a sleeve somewhere
In a house full of mirrors with gold ladened stairs
No police reports filed just conventional grief
And that elegant loathing of new disbelief

Is it pain that keeps teaching the lessons we learn
In a world just as hot as the coal we have burned
As she sees herself passing in honest reflection
The bar window glass housing all introspection

Regrets can seem cheap and a waste of your time
If life is a lemon then squeeze out that lime
And drink to your future in good moderation
But don't stay too long at the old thinking station

Money and paper are both made of trees
That she swings from each day on the value trapeze
Making ends meet just enough for the soul
Is not complicated and never grows old

She tucks a large bill in a homeless mans hand
As she walks away hoping he might understand
That a gift from the heart saves a mind lost in grief
Yes it works for the giver and those who receive

At home she is greeted by mans best friend
Her smile gets that tail up and wagging again
No comparison there to a pets loyalty
A companion with nothing but pure honesty

Each wag of that tail might be counting the loss
Of the life she just left and intentionally tossed
No more lies and false greed, no more cold hearted stares
From that cruel mindless self centered rich millionaire

And the words from her childhood echo so clearly
Once told by her grandmother spoken so dearly
"A rich man will own any poor girl who's willing
To trade her own soul for the heart that he's killing"

But gone is that sweater she clung to in grief
And the years that she spent with her heart on his sleeve
The mind is a spark and the soul is the flame
and your life is rekindled again just the same

Po'tree: Impossible...

In our hearts beat the rhythm of infinite dreams
In our souls we need not know what this means
Faith is the compass that wakes us tomorrow
Time is the essence of all things we borrow

I like to lean with a smile to tease gravity
Everything we do means the world to me
Through out our own lives we may see why we live
The reason we're here is our reason to give

Those who make haste to control other's dreams
Lose the meaning of hope and destroy everything
The heaven they've made with their insecure minds
Will be void of their soul like a light to the blind

Karma and justice divided by grief
Subtracted by moments of pure disbelief
All tell a tale that we find so endearing
When we take the time to confront what we're fearing

Negative news is abusive and crass
It manifests future events from the past
Focused on this type of sincerity
Brings out the worst of our humanity

Truth is a razor, a shield and a cup
It cuts and protects and might swallow you up
A day without truth is a child with no smile
I can live with your lies but I'd drown in denial

For every lost heart there's a family of dreams
For every cruel act there's an ocean of streams
For every lost moment that echos with pain
There's a chance of pure hope to remind you again

It is impossible for all to be lost...
